According to the State of North Carolina, Division of Archives, John Fulford who settled in what is now Carteret County NC in the late 1600s was the first white male born in the Carolinas. In an article dated Sept. 18, 1893 in The New Bern Daily Journal, his grave was identified in a cemetery outside Beaufort, NC in an area called the Straits, “bricked up with English brick.” In 1971 such a grave was found in the Fulford Cemetery off of Piper Lane in Gloucester. There are no signs of it today. Photos of this cemetery are on the cemetery page.
The town of North Miami Beach, Florida was called Fulford until 1931. It was settled by William Hawkins Fulford, the son of William Fulford and Syvil Pigott Fulford of Carteret County North Carolina. His father was the Keeper of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse in Carteret County for many years and when he moved to South Florida William Hawkins Fulford was the Keeper of the Biscayne House of Refuge, lifesaving station on Miami Beach.
